Scope
This policy explains how USA Wire handles information about the people who read our journalism, contact our newsroom or receive our email updates. It applies to this website and to the email we send. It does not apply to third party websites we link to, which operate their own policies.
Information we collect
When you read an article, our hosting infrastructure records the technical information any web server needs in order to deliver a page: the requesting IP address, the time of the request, the page requested, the referring page where one is sent by your browser, and a user agent string describing your browser and operating system. These server logs are used for security, abuse prevention and diagnosing faults.
We collect aggregate analytics about how our pages are used, such as which articles are read, how readers arrive and which countries traffic comes from. This is used to make editorial decisions about what to cover and to find technical problems such as slow pages. We configure analytics to avoid building profiles of individuals across other websites.
If you contact us, we hold the message you send and any contact details you include, for as long as needed to deal with the matter and to keep a record of correspondence about corrections. If you subscribe to an email update, we hold the address you provide and a record of your consent.
What we do not do
We do not sell reader data. We do not knowingly collect information from children. We do not require an account in order to read our journalism, and we do not attempt to identify individual readers by name from their browsing behaviour.
Legal basis and purpose
Where data protection law requires a legal basis, we rely on our legitimate interest in operating a secure and functioning publication for server logs and aggregate measurement, on consent for email updates and non-essential cookies, and on the necessity of processing correspondence in order to respond to it.
Processors
We use third parties to operate the site, including a hosting provider, a content delivery and security network, an analytics provider and an email delivery provider. These organisations process data on our instructions and are not permitted to use it for their own purposes. Advertising partners, where used, may set their own cookies; those are treated as non-essential and are described in our cookie policy.
Retention
Server logs are retained for a limited operational period and then deleted or aggregated. Analytics data is retained in aggregate form. Correspondence is retained for as long as the matter is open and, where it concerns a correction, for the life of the article record. Email subscriber records are deleted when a subscription ends.
Your choices
You may unsubscribe from any email we send using the link in that email. You may decline non-essential cookies through the consent controls on this site and may block or delete cookies in your browser at any time. Depending on where you live, you may have rights to request access to the personal data we hold about you, to have it corrected, to have it deleted, to object to certain processing, or to receive a copy in a portable format. You may also have a right to opt out of the sale or sharing of personal information; we do not sell personal information.
Security and transfers
This site is served over encrypted connections and access to reader correspondence is limited to editorial staff who need it. Our service providers may process data in the United States and other countries; where required, transfers are made under recognised safeguards. No system is perfectly secure, and we would rather say so than imply otherwise.
Changes and contact
If we change this policy materially we will update the date on this page and, where the change affects how we use existing data, describe it plainly. Questions about privacy may be sent through our contact page.
